Barbie Turns 50

It was on this day, March 9, in 1959, that the infamous BarbieĀ® made her debut at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Ruth Handler (1916-2002) is credited with creating the country’s first mass-marketed adult-looking teenage fashion doll. Since then over one billion Barbie dolls have been manufactured by Mattel, Inc., a toy company Handler founded with her husband Elliott and Harold “Matt” Matson in 1945.

Using a German doll modeled after a cartoon character called Bild Lilli and her daughter’s paper dolls as her inspiration, Handler gave life to Barbie, resulting in one of the largest and most successful toy companies of the 20th Century.
